Join the Through the Cracks team and help build the future of journalism
Through the Cracks: Crowdfunding in Journalism is a news website that shares stories of news startups, photographers, documentary filmmakers and citizen journalists who use crowdfunding to make reporting and storytelling possible.
We’re looking for reporters to join our team and help report on how to bring underreported stories to life and fill gaps in the media landscape.
We share these stories to enable and inspire anyone with an entrepreneurial spirit and a story to tell and focus on the following categories:
- Photography
- Documentary
- Watchdog
- News Startups
- Podcast
- Longform
We also spread stories about revenue beyond crowdfunding and ways to sustain news startups.
See this explainer video or visit our About Us page to learn more. Questions? Email news@throughcracks.com.
Contributors can pitch stories or receive story assignments. All contributors work based on their availability. You should be a good writer with a passion for testing ideas to sustain journalism in the future.
This is an unpaid position, but there are benefits, among them:
- Work with a team of like-minded journalists from around the world in Europe, Latin America and the United States
- Get your work edited by a skilled team of editors
- Learn about crowdfunding and get an inside view of this new approach to journalism
- The ability to speak with and learn best practices from innovative and successful news startups
We’re optimistic about the future of journalism but we aren’t idealists. We understand that crowdfunding is no silver bullet but that it does make possible innovation, experiments, reader engagement, market testing, etc. that can play a critical role in the future of independent media.
