Feminist news startups are still kicking butt on Kickstarter

In a recent interview I was asked about trends Through the Cracks: Crowdfunding in Journalism reporters have spotted since the site launched. The first thing that came to mind was the success of campaigns by women, for women to create things like longform publications and news startups.

We wrote a story about women journalists kicking butt on Kickstarter in February and in the past two weeks we came across two more excellent examples you should know about.

Mary Review

With eight days to go, Mary Review has raised more than $24,000 for the first issue of a general interest magazine.

Former Fast Company editor Jillian Goodman explained her thinking behind the publication in a Cosmopolitan.com post titled “Why I’m Starting a New Magazine Written and Edited Exclusively by Women.”

Chicas Poderosas

Chicas Poderosas‘ campaign to raise $10,000 ended successfully Monday. The organization has conducted training for more than 1,000 women journalists across Latin America. Chicas Poderosas has received more than $80,000 from various organizations to continue training, according to All Digitocracy.

You can hear more about Chicas Poderosas founder Mariana Santos in this recently released John S. Knight fellowship Journalism Challenge video.
